11-year-old on a mini bike pursued by law enforcement

SOLOMON — An 11-year-old found himself handcuffed and in the back of a patrol car after he led law enforcement on a vehicle chase.

A Graham County Sheriff’s deputy was dispatched to Bowie Avenue in Solomon the evening of Sept. 15, after reports came in of a child riding a motorized mini bike in the roadway. Witnesses calling into dispatch said the juvenile was driving recklessly at an excessive rate of speed, including doing wheelies.

When the deputy attempted a traffic stop, the rider continued, using a phone to video record the patrol vehicle. The bike had no lights on, despite riding in the dark; however, the rider was wearing a helmet.

Once the rider eventually stopped, he was taken into custody and a guardian was contacted. The child said he didn’t initially stop because he didn’t want his bike taken away.

The child was given a juvenile referral for unlawful flight from law enforcement and released to his grandmother. The bike was impounded for 20 days.
