WASHINGTON, D.C. — As one of the last actions before a surprise adjournment, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act.
The passage occurred Tuesday night on a bi-partisan voice vote, right before Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., adjourned the House until after the Nov. 3 General Election.
The bill requires the Department of Transportation to require every vehicle be equipped with an AM radio, and that manufacturers may not charge extra for the radios. The purpose is to ensure that all drivers have immediate access to the Emergency Alert System.
“For generations, AM radio has kept AZ06 and rural America connected to the local news and emergency information they count on. This bi-partisan win keeps AM radio in new cars at no additional cost to Arizonans,” U.S. Rep. Juan Ciscomani, R-Ariz., said in a posting to social media. Ciscomani represents Graham, Greenlee and Cochise counties.
The Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee approved companion legislation in April 2025 and, with the House passage, the measure can now move to the full Senate for a vote.
