WILLCOX — A Rex Allen Days board member has been taken into custody following an investigation into alleged embezzlement.
In a prepared release, Willcox Police said they were alerted to the alleged crime following an audit conducted by the nonprofit board, that found about $48,000 missing.
During a search of the suspect’s home, Willcox detectives reported finding evidence of the embezzlement, as well as information there might be other victims in addition to Rex Allen Days. Investigators continue to work on identifying those potential victims and extent of additional or related crimes.
Name of the suspect has not yet been released.
“Our department remains committed to supporting Rex Allen Days Inc. and their long-standing mission of providing a safe and enjoyable event for all residents each year. We take allegations of financial wrongdoing very seriously, especially when they affect community organizations that play such an important role in Willcox. We will continue working diligently to ensure a thorough and fair investigation,” Police Chief Dale Hadfield said in the press release.
Rex Allen Days takes place Oct. 1-4 and includes a carnival, parade, car show, gun show, rodeo and the Cowboy Hall of Fame induction and dinner.
Rex Allen Days is named for actor/singer Rex Allen, who was born in Willcox in 1920. He starred as a singing cowboy in dozens of movies and narrated nature films for Disney. He also had three Top 10 hits on the U.S. Country charts — “Sparrow in the Treetop,” “Crying in the Chapel” and “Don’t Go Near the Indians.”
