THATCHER — The Thatcher Town Council has moved its regular meeting up a week this month.
In order for town officials to attend the annual League of Arizona Cities and Town conference in Phoenix, Aug.18-21, the regular meeting of the Thatcher Council has been moved to Wednesday, Aug. 12, at 6 p.m.
On the Thatcher Town Council agenda is an update on the opening of the new Culver’s restaurant, currently scheduled for Aug. 31, and what is listed on the agenda as “golf course assistance.”
The Safford City Council also discussed the “previous intergovernmental agreement /contract between the City of Safford and Town of Thatcher for the Mt. Graham Golf Course” at its Aug. 10 meeting; however, Safford Council’s discussion was in executive session closed to the public.
No action can be taken in a closed executive session.
Despite the golf course being within Thatcher Town limits, it is City of Safford property and, in January 2025, the Safford City Council authorized then City Manager John Cassella to renegotiate the agreement between Safford and Thatcher for operations of the golf course. In April 2025, Cassella notified Thatcher the city was terminating the joint operating agreement.
With Safford funding operations on its own and, due to increased expenses, in June 2026 the City Council approved a $440,000 amendment to the golf course’s budget.
