Casita construction scam hitting the state

PHOENIX — Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes is warning the public about a new scam making the rounds, this time involving housing.

The scammers are posing as contractors for development of accessory dwelling units on homeowners’ properties.

The scammers take a deposit and promise to begin work “soon,” but instead keep the money without any work performed. Victims find no building permits had been pulled and the scammers are using a legitimate contractor’s license, possibly exposing the real contractor to liability.

Mayes’ office recommends homeowners get multiple written estimates from properly licensed contractors in good standing with the state and never pay the full amount up front.

Those who believe they may have been scammed can file a complaint with the Arizona Registrar of Contractors at roc.az.gov/file-complaint  or call 602-542-1525.
