Paving work on Highway 70 in Safford, Thatcher to start Sunday

SAFFORD — Motorists traveling U.S. Highway 70 through Safford and Thatcher should add extra time to travel starting Sunday.

Arizona Department of Transportation announced that paving work on the highway, between Reay Lane in Thatcher to 8th Street in Safford, will begin with overnight lane restrictions — from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. — Feb. 22-26.

Daytime lane restrictions for the paving of the inside and center lanes will be in place March 4-16, from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Overnight lane restrictions for the paving of the outside lanes and intersections will be in place from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., March 17 to mid-April.

Traffic signals will be deactivated and police will control traffic when work is taking place in intersections.

The project is expected to be complete by June.
