As holiday shipping deadlines hit this week, millions of packages are arriving on doorsteps at once, turning the delivery rush into a shopping spree for porch pirates.
A new nationwide study from Lombardo Homes shows this surge is when package theft spikes the most: 57% of all package theft occurs during the holiday season, and 64% of Americans say they’re more worried about theft this year due to current economic pressures.
Key findings from the study:
- 95% of Americans will have packages delivered this holiday season, and nearly half (48%) have had a package stolen
- Shoppers will spend $586 on average on online holiday purchases, making theft especially costly
- The average stolen package is worth $204, hitting budgets already strained by inflation
With package theft now one of the most common crimes families face during the holidays, the issue is especially relevant right now. This data offers timely insight and practical takeaways for consumers navigating last-minute shopping risks.
