WILLCOX — Retail sales in Willcox were down significantly in September, by a larger margin than another Cochise County community.

That’s according to the Southeast Arizona Economic Development Group, who reported Tuesday that retail sales in Willcox were down 12.8 percent in September from the previous month, and gown 6.3 percent for the first nine months of the year.

Retail sales were down 11.4 percent in Bisbee, down 8.3 percent in Douglas, down 4.1 percent in Tombstone and down 2.7 percent in Sierra Vista; however, retail sales were up 4.1 percent in Huachuca City and up 1.3 percent in Benson.

Willcox fared better in two other economic sectors, with hotel/motel receipts down just one-half percent in September, while restaurant and bar sales were up 4.4 percent.

While retail sales countywide were down 3.2 percent in September, sales by remote sellers who generate local sales tax but don’t have a physical presence in Cochise County were up 11 percent.
