SAFFORD — Democrats, independents and even a few Republicans spent the early morning hours of the Labor Day holiday reminding passersby that it was the average citizen who did the work building the nation.
Sponsored by the Graham County Democratic Committee, the Workers over Billionaires protest took place Monday morning on the corner of U.S. Highway 70 and 20th Avenue.
During the Juneteenth national holiday (June 19), President Trump posted to Truth Social, “Too many non-working holidays in American. It is costing our Country $BILLIONS OF DOLLARS to keep all of these businesses closed. The workers don’t want it either! Soon we’ll end up having a holiday for every once working day of the year. It must change if we are going to, MAKE AMERICAN GREAT AGAIN!”
Patty Cervantez, Graham County Democratic Committee chair said the president is incorrect.
“We the people are the government. We’re going to work and we’re going to pay taxes for those who need our help,” Cervantez said. “No, there’s not too many holidays.”

She added that, while the protest focused on getting the oligarchy out of politics, it was also about celebrating and protecting the rights of America’s workers, which is why the Labor Day holiday was selected to stage the event.
There were thousands of Workers over Billionaires protests, picnics and rallies staged across the nation on Monday.
It was the sixth Gila Valley protest since President Trump returned to office in January. Previous protests took place April 5, April 19, May 1, June 14 and July 17.
