THATCHER — One vacancy has been filled, but another came open.

During Tuesday’s regular meeting, Ryan Allen was sworn in as a Thatcher Town Council member, filling the vacancy created by the resignation of Heston Welker.

Allen will serve the remainder of Welker’s term, which ends December 2026. Allen can also choose to run for a full four-year term next year.

The other vacancy was announced Tuesday, when the Town Council accepted the resignation of Shaffen Woods. Woods resigned after taking a position with the Thatcher Police Department, creating a conflict of interest.

“Thank you for the opportunity to serve on the Council, even though it was short lived. I learned a lot and look forward to continuing my service in this different role,” Woods wrote in his resignation letter.

Woods has 25 years of law enforcement experience, serving most recently as Thatcher Police Chief until his retirement in January 2024. He then took a position as senior supervisor of security for Freeport-McMoRan’s Safford operation.

Woods was elected to the Town Council in 2024.

The town will now advertise for those seeking appointment to serve the remainder of Woods’ term, which runs until December 2028. Those interested should submit a letter of interest and a resume at Thatcher Town Hall, 3700 W. Main St.
