PIMA — A holiday 5k has taken on a new importance following a Gila Valley tragedy.

The Gila Valley Freedom 5k Run/Walk was organized as a community event for July 4 in Pima by Torrie Baldwin. But following the death of Baldwin and her husband in a plane crash in San Diego on June 8, the event is now being used a fund-raiser for the Baldwin’s surviving children.

The event has also changed to a cash-only registration at the time of the event, due to the organizer’s unavailability on EventBrite.

Cost to participate is $20 per person and registration opens at 5 a.m. Friday, July 4. The Freedom 5k will start from the Pima pool at 6 a.m. The first 200 to register will receive a T-shirt.

For those unable to run, donations for the family can be made by clicking here.
