BYLAS — San Carlos Apache Forest Resources Program dealt with a pair of wildfires in the Bylas area over the weekend.

The Turnbull fire started April 24 in steep, rugged terrain of the lower portion of Mount Turnbull. The Geronimo Interagency Hotshot crew and one fire module attacked the fire from the perimeter, to stop its spread.

The Gila fire, near the river, started April 26 and only reached 1 acre before containment was achieved.

Start of both fires is under investigation.

The San Carlos Apache Reservation is under Stage 2 fire restrictions, meaning building of fires and campfires — even at improved campsites — is prohibited.
