THATCHER — Add another major roadway project will be taking place in Graham County this year.

At the most recent Thatcher Town Council meeting, Mayor Jenny Howard said the resurfacing of U.S. Highway 70 by the Arizona Department of Transportation will now begin this year instead of fiscal year 2026.

Howard sits on ADOT’s Transportation Board, and the board voted to move up the project at its February meeting.

The $17.3 million project will resurface Highway 70 between 8th Street in Safford and Reay Lane in Thatcher. The work is now scheduled to begin May 31.

Howard added that the resurfacing of Highway 70 between Reay Lane and Pima has been moved from fiscal year 2027 to 2026.
