PIMA, Ariz. — The Pima Roughriders begin their postseason run on their home court Monday, hosting Horizon Honors in the opening round of the 2025 AIA 2A Girls Basketball State Championship. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. at Pima High School, with the winner advancing to the quarterfinals on February 21st.
Pima (19-8), the No. 6 seed, enters the tournament as one of the strongest defensive teams in the state, allowing just 29 points per game while averaging 54.9 points on offense. The Roughriders, who finished third in the 2A East Region, have used their high-pressure defense and experience to control games this season.
Playing in front of their home crowd, the Roughriders will look to build on their 7-3 record at home and advance to the next round, where they would face either No. 3 Fountain Hills or No. 14 Valley (Sanders).
Roughriders Lean on Defensive Pressure, Senior Leadership
Pima has relied on a balanced lineup, with multiple players stepping up throughout the season. Senior Sadie Richardson has been a key playmaker, averaging 10.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.6 steals per game, while fellow senior Adysen Hoopes contributes 10.6 points and 6.5 rebounds per contest. Sophomore Hanna Ashby has been a defensive spark, averaging 3.4 steals per game.
The Roughriders’ aggressive defense forces nearly 19.7 turnovers per game, a strength they will look to exploit against a Horizon Honors team that has struggled at times against pressure.
Scouting Horizon Honors
Horizon Honors (18-11), the No. 11 seed, enters the tournament on a four-game winning streak, including a 58-52 victory over Rancho Solano Prep. The Eagles finished third in the 2A Valley Region and are averaging 39.3 points per game.
Junior Audriana Anglada, a 5-foot-10 forward, leads Horizon Honors with 10.8 points and 6.1 rebounds per game, while freshman Alicia Londono provides energy and scoring, averaging 8.0 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 2.6 steals.
The Eagles have been solid at home but have struggled on the road, holding a 5-7 away record this season. Their ability to handle Pima’s defensive pressure will likely determine how competitive they can be.
