Multiple injuries in head-on crash on 191 in the Black Hills Thursday morning

GRAHAM COUNTY — Six people were injured, with one suffering life-threatening injuries, following a head-on collision Thursday on U.S. Highway 191, between Safford and Clifton.

Arizona Department of Public Safety officials said the crash occurred at milepost 143, east of Cueto Road, at 4:59 a.m.

DPS reports the crash involved a van and a sedan. Two of the crash victims were air evacuated via helicopter to Tucson and Phoenix area hospitals, and the other four transported via ground ambulance to Mt. Graham Regional Medical Center.

According Graham County Sheriff’s Office, which assisted DPS on the scene, three of the victims suffered head injuries, one a broken arm and another was having trouble breathing. There is no word on the nature of injuries for the sixth victim.

Cause of the crash has not yet been disclosed and investigation into the incident is ongoing.

The roadway was closed in both directions while rescue efforts were underway. Arizona Department of Transportation reports the roadway was re-opened at about 8:30 a.m.
