SAFFORD — The Safford City Council is getting closer to filling the seat vacated by the death of Mayor Jason Kouts.

Eleven Safford voters have applied for appointment to the seat. That field will be narrowed down to three during a closed executive session at the March 11 regular meeting.

Those top three will then be interviewed by the City Council during an executive session during the March 25 regular meeting. The council could then reconvene into an open public meeting, and nominate and vote on an appointment.

Whoever is selected will serve as a regular member of the City Council and not as mayor. The term is until Dec. 31, 2024.
