SAFFORD — The United Way of Graham and Greenlee Counties opened the doors to its new offices on U.S. Highway 70 on Wednesday . . . and opened the check book.

United Way Executive Director Denise Benton and Grants Manager Amanda Patterson presented Luke and Lisa Hatch a check for $97,355 for the nonprofit organization they created, Families Fighting Cancer Together.

Luke said there are currently 20 families in the Gila Valley with children fighting cancer or other significant illness, and this money will help those families when the children require treatment in Phoenix or Tucson.

“It’s not uncommon to have three or four families at the hospital at the same time,” Luke said. “So it’s making sure they have money and food while they’re there and to get them back.”

Families Fighting Cancer Together provides financial assistance to families with children who have been burdened with life-altering diagnoses. To make a donation, go to Donation – Families Fighting Cancer Together (ffct.us).

The United Way of Graham and Greenlee Counties makes grants to nonprofit, educational and governmental organizations thanks to donations from Freeport-McMoRan and Freeport employees, employees of the City of Safford and Graham County, and individual donors.
