THATCHER — The board of directors for the Eastern Arizona Hispanic Heritage Corporation got a big boost with a recently added member.

Former Thatcher Mayor Bob Rivera has joined the board for the local nonprofit organization.

“When they asked me, I was taken aback,” Rivera said. “I was honored to say yes and honored to be part of this group.”

Rivera’s joining was announced just a few days after the organization conducted a successful Hispanic Heritage Month celebration at Eastern Arizona College.

“Eighty sponsors this year, 80 sponsors,” Rivera said. “We want to thank each and every one of them for donating their time and their money for scholarships. All monies, almost 100 percent, goes to the scholarship fund.”

Since Eastern Arizona Hispanic Heritage Corporation was founded in 2015, the organization has given out more than $30,000 in scholarships to Graham and Greenlee residents to Eastern Arizona College — two full scholarships of $2,700 each per year, plus two book scholarships at $500 each.
