PIMA — The Pima Town Council learned its support of programs in the community has been significantly more than planned.

“We first looked at it today, and the budget was $4,000 and we have spent about $30,000,” said Town Manager Vernon Batty.

Batty said in addition to giving money to things such as Eastern Arizona Museum and Historical Society, and the annual Thanksgiving day Turkey Trot, the town has been helping fund a number of school initiatives, such as paying for hotel rooms for athletic teams that are traveling.

Batty is proposing that any financial support the town offers for non-town functions follow an application process. He would conduct the initial review to see if the funding is appropriate and, if so, bring the application before the council for final approval.

Councilman Lucas Hoopes suggested the bulk of the applications be submitted during the budget process, with a small amount set aside for applications for unforeseen circumstances throughout the year.
