SAFFORD — Multiple groups plan to spend a few days on the maintenance of Clark Peak Trail next weekend.

Coming together to improve the trail are the Gila Valley Hiking Club, Gila Valley Adventure Club, the Sky Islands Trail Stewards and Safford District of the Coronado National Forest.

The trail clean-up will take place July 16-17, and free camping for volunteers will be offered both days at Columbine Corrals Campground. Lunch each day will be provided by Graham County Chamber of Commerce and a local restaurant.

Clark Peak starts at an elevation of 9,000 feet, so volunteers should plan for cooler temperatures. Volunteers are asked to bring:

● Camping gear and food for the weekend (drinking water is available at camp).

● Appropriate clothing for temperatures ranging from the high 80s to the low 40s.

● Work gloves, head protection, eye protection.

● Trail shoes or hiking boots, a pack, and bladder/bottles that can carry a minimum of 3 liters of water.

Volunteers will meet at the Clark Peak trailhead at 9 a.m. each morning and return by 1 p.m. No trail maintenance experience is needed and tools will be provided. Head and eye protection is required; bring a hard hat or bike helmet. Volunteers should be comfortable hiking for several miles at elevation and ready for mountain inclement weather, which could include wind and rain.

Because it is a multi-day event, participants are asked to register at July 16-17 Mt. Graham Trail Maintenance Weekend Tickets, Sat, Jul 16, 2022 at 9:00 AM | Eventbrite. Campground information can be found at Coronado National Forest – Columbine Corrals Campground (usda.gov).
