SAFFORD — The Safford City Council and city staff continue to work on quality of life issues, especially when it comes to parks.

At its most recent meeting, the City Council voted to appoint Ed Lopez to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee, with Mayor Richard Ortega offering a specific directive.

“As far as I’m concerned, and I think everybody should be, is we have to get the public involved,” Ortega said. “When we started this process, we had input from the public, and I think we should follow through and hear from the public.”

Over the past two years, the city has emphasized park development, including approving a contract for final engineering of a new park at 8th Avenue and Discovery Park Boulevard. There are also plans to further develop the park at 14th Avenue and El Paso Boulevard.

And during last Monday’s meeting, the council unanimously granted an easement to Graham County for four parcels of land that will be a part of the new Linear Park in Safford and Thatcher along the Gila River.
