THATCHER — “In our industry, we’re very committed to safe ride programs, and this year is no different,” said Tim Linden, owner of III Counties Distributing. “We want to make sure that everybody decides to ride.”

Linden is once again teaming with the Graham County Substance Abuse Coalition to encourage holiday party goers to either designate a sober driver, or arrange for transportation after the party.

“If they’re at a bar or a party, and they’ve find that they have drank too much, there are phone numbers they can call and they can get free rides home. We want everybody to be safe,” said Kathy Grimes, executive director for the Substance Abuse Coalition.

The number to call when out an unable to drive is 928-424-HOPE (4673).

The Graham County Substance Abuse Coalition is also asking responsible adults to keep an eye on the teens during holiday parties at the house.

“We would like to ask our adults who may be hosting parties this holiday season, to make sure who is watching the punch,” Grimes said. “Who is making sure those underage drinkers are not drinking, and provide them with sodas, water or things like that. Just have an adult overseeing the alcohol.”

A person is considered driving impaired with a blood-alcohol content of .08 or more.

According to Arizona Department of Transportation, a first-time DUI charge carries no less than 10 consecutive days in jail; a $1,250 fine; and alcohol screening, education and treatment. A second offense is 90 days in jail, a $3,000 fine and suspension of a driver’s license for one year.

A juvenile is considered impaired with any blood-alcohol content and faces loss of a driver’s license until at least age 21.
