SAFFORD — At Tuesday’s regular meet of the Graham County Board of Supervisors, the board unanimously approved a declaration of emergency over the Pinnacle fire.

The fire burned 34,417 acres in the Santa Teresa Wilderness and is at 90-percent containment.

“As you know, the BAER (Burned Area Emergency Response) team was out there last week doing their report, and we anxiously await those results,” said County Manager Dustin Welker.

BEAR teams assess areas devastated by wildfire about potential for flooding once monsoon rains hit the area.

Welker explained the declaration was necessary in order for the county to qualify for financial assistance should the BAER team recommend actions to mitigate flooding, such as cleaning out washes.
