THATCHER, Ariz. – The Graham County Community College District Governing Board has approved CORE Construction as the contractor for a new building dedicated to the College’s Cosmetology Program and a potential medical clinic. The facility will be located near the southeast corner of College Avenue and Highway 70 in Thatcher.

The new building, spanning 19,300 square feet, will significantly enhance EAC’s facilities. It will feature a 12,000-square-foot cosmetology center and 7,300 square feet of medical space. The estimated cost is $12 million, funded by EAC reserves that are not subject to expenditure limits. Construction is set to begin in mid-August and is expected to be completed by January 2026.

“We are pleased to have this unique opportunity to bring additional revenue to the College,” said EAC President Todd Haynie. “Funds will be generated from renting part of the facility to a medical provider, and those funds will not be subject to expenditure limitations. Additionally, we will save money by avoiding the need to lease a building for our Cosmetology Program.”

The new building aims to upgrade the facilities for EAC’s Cosmetology Program, which has consistently maintained a waiting list for the past decade. Currently, EAC can accommodate 70 students in its existing location; the new facility will increase this capacity to 130 students.

“This facility will empower EAC to equip even more students with the advanced skills required in the high-demand field of cosmetology,” said Haynie. “By expanding our capacity and modernizing our resources, we are significantly enhancing our ability to serve the growing needs of our community and ensuring that our graduates are well-prepared for successful careers.”

The state-of-the-art facility will provide comprehensive training and hands-on experience for students. It will include three instructional classrooms, a skincare room, a manicure/pedicure room, a practice salon, a main salon, student locker rooms, a student/staff breakroom, two offices, restrooms, and a laundry room.

“This building will also enhance the student experience at EAC by providing easy access to health and discounted cosmetology services, such as haircuts, right across the street,” said Haynie. “With so many students within walking distance, our cosmetology students will gain more practical experience than ever before.”

The majority of the funding for this project was secured by District 19 legislators, including Senator David Gowan, Representative Gail Griffin, and Representative Lupe Diaz. Remaining costs were covered by reserve funds set aside by the EAC Governing Board.
