Busy Easter weekend starts with Good Friday events

THATCHER —Good Friday and the Saturday before Easter offer plenty to do in the Gila Valley.

The Gila Valley Ministerial Association will conduct the program, The Seven Last Words of Christ, at noon Friday, at the Eastern Arizona College Thatcher campus’ outdoor amphitheater, located on the north side of the Academic Programs Building. Attendees are asked to bring their own chairs.

It’s the 28th year religious leaders from multiple faiths have joined together to conduct the service. Immediately following the program, the Ministerial Association will offer a Lenten lunch at the Stake Relief Society Building of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, on Church Street in Thatcher.

At 4:30 p.m., the Ministerial Association will conduct the Way of the Cross on Safford’s Main Street.

Starting from the Graham County Courthouse and walking east, participants will hear of the 14 Stations of the Cross, from Christ’s condemnation by Pilate, to the placing of his lifeless body in the sepulcher. The program will end at All Saints Episcopal Church.

Starting at 5 p.m., Crossroads Baptist Church in Thatcher will offer a special dinner and a movie outing for Good Friday.

Cost for the spaghetti dinner and showing of the movie “The Prince of Egypt” is $8 for adults, $5 for children, and proceeds will be used to construct the church’s new playground.
