PIMA — The Pima Town Council was the first in the Gila Valley to declare April 2-8 the Week of the Young Child.

“We know that 90s percent of a child’s brain develops between birth and age 5,” said Antoinette Griffin, with First Things First. “So it’s critical that our little ones have access to quality early-learning experiences at home and in their community.”

The Town Council voted unanimously Tuesday to approve the proclamation.

As part of the Week of the Young Child, First Things First makes age-appropriate books available for free, as well as help parents sign up for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, where a free book is mailed each month to children until age 5.

Pima Library also has 300 free books for children Pre-K to middle school. Parents must accompany their children to receive a free book.

Finally, First Things First is teaming with the Safford City-Graham County Library to bring in Latin Grammy winner Mister G for a free concert at the David M. Player Center for the Arts for preschoolers. The concert will take place April 7, at 10 a.m., and he will have available autographed copies of his book free to attendees, while supplies last.

The meeting was also the first for the council’s newest member, Brian Paull. He was voted in by the other council members Feb. 22 to fill the remaining term of Deborah Barr, who tendered her resignation early last month.

“As far as the first meeting, I think it went well. I didn’t say much but (I’m) just getting my feet wet,” Paull said.
