SAFFORD — Our Neighbor’s Farm and Pantry is getting ready to host a “Weed-a-thon.”

“It’s a contest,” said Stacey Scarce, Our Neighbor’s Farm and Pantry executive director. “It starts March 22 and ends April 22, which is Earth Day.”

The premise is for volunteers to help remove weeds from the farm, to maximize growing of fresh fruits and vegetables. The weeds gathered by each volunteer will be weighed and tallied, and the person with the heaviest weight will win a prize. The person who pulls the weed with the longest root will also receive a prize.

Thanks to a grant from United Way of Graham and Greenlee Counties, the farm is also installing about 300-feet of raised growing beds, and implementing a new demonstration garden, to help home growers learn new techniques and water conservation efforts.

Volunteers interested in participating in the Weed-a-thon are asked to contact Deena Jaffe, Our Neighbor’s Farm and Pantry farm manager, at the farm behind First United Methodist Church.
