When it’s heating up it may be time for your A.C. tuneup

SAFFORD- You roll up your windows, drive a few yards, flip on your air conditioning… but nothing happens. What now?

Summertime is just around the corner, and temperatures here will be rising—which is exactly when you’ll appreciate your car’s air conditioner.  Boulevard Big O Tires has been the Gila Valley’s air conditioning (A/C)  specialist for over 65 years.  The team at Boulevard Big O take pride in the fact that they have been delivering quality A/C repair to local customers for over 65 years.  Their team of experienced mechanics are Auto Service Excellence (ASE) certified, and can be guaranteed to take care of their client’s vehicle better than anyone else in the Gila Valley.

Boulevard Big O Tires, located at 1217 W. Thatcher Blvd. in Safford, is owned by Preston and Melissa Alder. Preston told Gila Valley Central that his trained technicians can do multiple upkeep performance checks on air conditioning systems.

“Our experienced technicians can perform an A/C performance check to diagnose why your car A/C is having problems and what needs to be repaired,” Preston said. “Whether you need your air conditioner tuned up, or you need an entire new air conditioning system, we can take care of your problem. Car A/C problems can stem from many issues, including a freon leak from a cracked O-ring seal in the A/C line, a worn-out filter/condenser, a loose wire, or excessive heat radiating from the engine.  Our technicians will figure out the root of your car’s A/C problem.”

The team at Boulevard Big O Tires use the latest technologies to diagnose any and all of your automotive A/C problems. If the automotive technicians suspect a leak, they will install a special ultra-violate dye that is only visible under a black light to detect leaks.

When asked why you shouldn’t use a Do-it-Yourself Car A/C recharge kit, Preston said that do-it-yourself recharge kits may be inaccurate and sometimes the ingredients of the kits may not recharge the automobile’s system properly.

“These Do-it-Yourself car A/C recharge kits can be inaccurate, and sometimes (contain) unsuitable solutions to recharging your car’s air conditioner.  The only true way to know exactly how much refrigerant is in your system is to completely recover the old refrigerant and recharge it with the precisely recommended manufacturer’s capacity. When you use the do-it-yourself kit, you are just topping the system off.  By just topping the system off, you are essentially guessing. The do-it-yourself kit relies on a gauge that reads the pressure on the low side of your vehicle’s A/C While this is “close,” it is definitely not precise. Your system’s pressure can vary greatly, depending on the ambient temperature outside, and even the temperature of your vehicle.”

Preston said that because the do-it-yourself system simply ‘guesses’ at what the best level of solution would be, the user may overcharge their air conditioning system. By over-charging, the do-it-yourself-er may damage the a.c. unit in the vehicle, and shorten the compressor’s life.

“By guessing, you can potentially overcharge or undercharge your vehicle’s A/C, and either situation can dramatically decrease the life of your air compressor. An overcharged system can cause your compressor to turn on and off excessively, and also potentially damage components due to the sheer pressures we are talking about. In the case of an undercharged system, you’re A/C compressor cannot be properly lubricated. You see, it is also the job of your refrigerant to transfer the A/C oil through the moving parts of you’re A/C compressor.,” Preston said. “When this does not happen, your compressor will end its life at an undesired time.”

Aside from overfilling, many do-it-yourself A/C kits contain a certain chemical that supposedly acts as a sealant for line leaks. Although this seems to be a fix-all for the system, Preston says that it will eventually gum up the A/C compressor.

“Some do-it-yourself kits contain “stop leak.” Stop leak is a very nasty substance that will gum up you’re A/C system and eventually stop the compressor from being properly lubricated.  When you recharge an A/C system, you must also add the proper amount of oil. Do-it-yourself kits do contain oil, but who knows how much is making it into your system. Too much or too little will damage your compressor,” Preston said.
