Velma Hancock Nelson, loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend passed away in Orem, Utah, at home peacefully during the night on November 22nd, 2016, having used up all her physical energies loving and serving.
Velma was born July 15th, 1920, in Thatcher, Arizona, the oldest of six children of loving parents, Velda and Clarence Hancock. She grew up in Thatcher, with sisters Eunice, Myrna and Clara and brother, Frank, and attended Eastern Arizona College meeting the love of her life, now deceased, Andrew Hyrum Nelson, and marrying in the Mesa Arizona Temple. After having lived, taught and farmed in southern Arizona, and Barstow, California, they moved to Orem, Utah, in 1997.
Continuing her education at Arizona State University, she obtained a teaching degree and began her life-long service of instructing young people in English, sewing, music and drama. She and Andrew fulfilled various callings in the LDS church, working in the Los Angeles and Mesa temples, and serving missions at the Deseret Industries and to the Kiribati Islands in the central Pacific. Velma also served as scribe for many years as Andrew performed patriarchal blessings.
Velma enjoyed working with her hands, crocheting, sewing and making an abundance of quilts. She loved to play the piano, sing, read, having fun with her posterity and helping others rise to their challenges.
Velma is predeceased by: her husband, Andrew Hyrum Nelson; a daughter, Joanna Alice Hanks; an infant son, George Clarence; her parents, Clarence and Velda Hancock; and her brother Frank. Velma is survived by: her sisters, Eunice Whetten, of Thatcher, Myrna McGrath, of St. Johns and Clara Nelson, of Orem, Utah; and by her children, Evelyn (Larry Crowther), Claudia (Martin Sipe), David Andrew (Julie Nelson) and Lloyd Hyrum (Linda Nelson). She loved her 27 grandchildren, over 50 great-grandchildren along with several great-great-grandchildren, always remembering to honor them on birthdays, Christmas and Valentine’s Day. We love and honor you Sister, Mom, Aunt, Grandma and Nana.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, November 26, 2016, in Orem, Utah, under the direction Utah Valley Mortuary. Velma will be interred in the Thatcher, Arizona Cemetery beside her husband and son at a graveside service at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 3, 2016.
