On Feb. 4, Boys & Girls Club of the Gila Valley Torch Club Director Mikayla Cope and Torch Club Adviser Chris Gutierrez took five Torch Club members to the annual Torch-Con event in Phoenix. Torch Club members from all over the state converged on Boys & Girls Club of the East Valley- Komatke Branch facility to partake in competitive games. Our members competed against other Torch Clubs in agility, trivia and team competitions.
Torch Club members were asked to bring as many pennies as they could for Kids in Crisis Arizona. Collectively, Arizona Torch clubs raised more than $1,000 for this organization, which provides food, clothing and shelter for children in need.
There were more than 320 Torch Club members in attendance. After lunch, all 320 members went to the nearby Cesar Chavez Park to clean up trash for about an hour. Our members definitely cherish the experience and can’t wait to go again next year. We are planning on taking as many as 20 members next year.
Torch Club is an exclusive club within the Boys & Girls Club of the Gila Valley. Torch Club is for members 11+, and its focus is academic success and volunteerism.
