THATCHER — The old saying is Defense wins Championships. If that is true this year, the Thatcher Eagles are well on their way. They held the Safford Bulldogs to just 59 total yards with 6 sacks and 2 fumbles.

The Eagles defense held their own as well but were on the field too long as Thatcher ran their traditional veer offense on drives of over 10 plays and wore down the Dogs defense.

Thatcher held a 7-0 lead at halftime as QB Mark Wren scampered in from 40 yards out with 1:46 remaining in the half. Bretton Dodge tacked on the final score of the night with an 11 yard scored with 6:53 remaining in the game.

It is the 2nd straight shutout by the Eagle defense after last week’s 29-0 win over Show Low.

Dodge and Jason Carrasco led the Eagles rushing attack with 69 yards apiece. The team rushed for 280 yards.

CJ Scrivner had 51 of the Bulldogs 59 total yards on the ground.

Safford falls to 1-2 on the year and will host Show Low next Friday. Show Low beat ALA-Ironwood 51-7 on Friday night.

Thatcher moves to 2-1 and will travel to undefeated Benson on Friday. The Bobcats shut out Santa Rita 43-0 on Friday.

With the win Thatcher moves closer to evening the overall series. Safford leads 21-20-1. It was the fourth straight win for the Eagles and their 4 ever shut out in the series.
