Student leaving school for holiday break nearly struck by car

SAFFORD – Last Friday as area students were leaving school for their Christmas break, a quick-thinking and observant high school student avoided being struck by a vehicle as he was walking home from school down 14th Avenue. The teen told authorities that a car came toward him and struck the curb, forcing him to run into the road to avoid being struck. The car apparently continued along the curb striking a recycling bin and then a light pole at the end of a driveway before leaving the scene.

A witness to the incident confirmed the teen’s report and also provided authorities with a picture of the back of the car that included the license plate. Authorities contacted Greenlee County Sheriff’s department and asked them to make contact with the individual listed at an address in Morenci.

As of this report, authorities have not made contact with the driver.
