SDA soliciting applications for a 48 hour business makeover

Applications are due by 6:00 p.m., February 28, 2019.

The Safford Downtown Association is soliciting applications for a business makeover. Once the business is selected the work will be completed April 24 & 25, 2019. Applicants must belong to the Safford Downtown Association, must be located downtown and must be willing to share some information about their business.

The winner will recieve $5,000 Cash, $500 in merchandise from Safford Builders, volunteer investment. The business owner is expected to leverage this investment with their own investment in cash, labor, in-kind or borrowing for maximum impact. The final investment may be 7k, 10k, 25K or more. As a result the winner will receive some combination of a renovated facade, including potential elements such as signage, awnings, windows, masonry of cornice repair. Upgraded interior space, including merchandising, improved layout and/or space design. Updated marketing materials and plan, including social media, e-marketing and print marketing promotions design and plan. Regional media coverage including press release and promotional video. Additional one on one technical assistance from the 48 Hour Makeover Committee before and during the implementation period.

Selection Criteria

Criteria will include

  • Increased sales
  • Increased visibility
  • Impact on the business,
  • Improved financial health,
  • Opportunity for expansion,
  • Ability to leverage the budget with business financial support and
  • Volunteer support to accomplish maximum lasting impact on the business.

An ability for the business to measure the impact of the event will also be considered.

Applications should address the criteria listed above. Applicants should also include plans, sketches and/or lists of equipment that the makeover would fund. Landlord approval is needed if necessary. There must be a demonstrated need for improvement.

$500 is budgeted to be distributed among finalists that do not win the makeover. The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) has agreed to help to include Quick Books classes, business plan counseling, financial analysis, marketing training, social media development and branding/logo counseling. Every effort will be made by the SDA to assist finalists with assistance that the SDA or SBDC can offer.

The 48 Hour Makeover Consulting Committee will determine the winner by conducting site evaluations (interviews at the business) and offer business consulting to the winner.
