Safford, Morenci fall, Thatcher advances in football playoffs

SAFFORD — The second time was definitely not a charm for the Safford Bulldogs on Friday night. Just a week after beating Sabino 28-6 to capture their first 3A South Conference Championship since 1998, the Bulldogs couldn’t respond and were eliminated by the Sabercats 30-19.

Safford tried multiple offenses and every time it felt like the Bulldogs were going to break through, they coughed the ball up and turned it over. The Sabercats responded by scoring on every ensuing possession to stretch the lead. A late 65 yard pass from Mason Duros to Justin Torrio got the Bulldogs to the 11 point deficit but they were unable to get any closer. The Bulldogs finish the season 8-3.

THATCHER — Don’t count out the Eagles in the playoffs. That was the message that was sent on Friday at Thatcher beat Bisbee 48-7. The Eagles had touchdowns from 5 different players, including to receiving scores from Brayden Oliver. The Eagles are now 13-0 in the last 3+ years and will travel to taken on 10-0 Trivium Prep. The Crimson Knights knocked of #15 Morenci 35-28. Morenci led 28-7 at halftime but Trivium Prep stormed back to take the lead in the 4th quarter, escaping with the win.
