SAFFORD — After being shut out last week by cross town rivals Thatcher, Safford bounced back with a dominating 45-8 win over the Show Low Cougars.

It was a defensive battle for the entire first quarter as neither team could find a groove on offense. The Bulldogs were the first to find the endzone on a 1 yard TD run by Robert White at the 10:29 mark of the 2nd quarter. The Dogs held the 7-0 lead until Justin Torrio nailed a 38 yard field goal as the half expired and the Bulldogs took a 10-0 lead into the locker room.

Despite having a 10 point lead and halftime the Bulldog offense only amassed 69 yards in the first half. That changed as soon as the 2nd half started. The Dogs pooched kicked it to start the 3rd quarter and recovered it to gain possession and momentum. Safford capped that drive off with a Sam Tobias 9 yard TD run to take a 17-0 lead.

Show Low answered back immediately on their next possession as Cal Fawcett found paydirt from 8 yards out and converted to the 2-point try to cut the lead to 17-8 with 5:02 left in the 3rd quarter.

Safford wasn’t finished yet and 3 minutes later CJ Scrivner was in the endzone from 2 yards out and Safford extended their lead 24-8. That was the first of 4 unanswered scores from Safford. Tobias added a 16 yard pick six, Scrivner a 30 yard fumble return and Eduardo Ogaz capped the night off with a 25 yard TD and the 45-8 win.

Safford finished the night with 261 yards of offense after the slow first half.

The Bulldogs move to 2-2 on the season and will host the Florence Gophers next Friday. The Gophers fell to Odyssey Institute 14-13 on Friday.
