Pima, Safford girls start postseason tonight

The Pima Lady Roughriders had a rough couple of weeks on the court, including a loss to Benson in the 2A East Semi-finals. Despite that, the were able to get into the top 24 teams for the 2A postseason.

The secured the #21 seed and will travel tonight to take on the #12 Desert Christian Eagles. Game time is 6:30 pm and can be heard on KATO 1230 AM or online by clicking here. The top 8 teams in 2A get a bye today and will play the winners of tonight’s play in round on Friday in Prescott Valley. Teams ranked 9-24 play tonight.

DC is lead by 6 foot Senior Center Emma Blunk. She averages 18.5 points per game and 12.8 rebounds per game, both team highs. She is the only player on the squad that averages double digits scoring per game. The Eagles have only shot 20% from the 3 point arc so it’s safe to say they will make an effort to feed the ball to Blunk down low.

Pima is led this year by Senior Guard Alani Blair. She averages 11.7 points per game to lead the team. Freshman Saydee Allred averages 9.5 points as well. Pima doesn’t have anyone on the roster taller than 5’10” Cydnee Palmer, which could be a problem keeping Blunk out of the paint.

Safford slipped all the way down to the #9 spot in the playoffs and will draw #24 American Leadership – Ironwood. That game will be played at Safford High tonight at 6:30pm. The 3A tournament this year is 24 teams, no play in games, making tonight the 1st round.

The Lady Bulldogs finished the season with a 14-5 power point record and 3rd place in the 3A South behind powerhouses Sabino and Tanque Verde. They are lead by Deion Abalos and Mia Carter who share the scoring load.

The Lady Warriors were the final team that qualified for the 3A tournament. They have a 7-11 overall power point record.

The winner of this game will play #8 Chinle on Friday in Ganado.
