Motorcycle accident results in fatality

SAFFORD – On Tuesday, Graham County Sheriff Deputies and Lifeline Paramedic’s arrived on scene in the area of Haekel Road in report of a single motor vehicle accident with a fatality.

Early in the afternoon, two BLM employees were doing bridge and culvert inspections when they were traveling down the road and came across a male in the road underneath a motorcycle. They quickly called 911 but could not hear the man breathing after they pulled the motorcycle off of him. The victim was identified as Stephen Douglas Jones of Toledo, Oregon. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The responding authorities noticed Stephen’s personal item’s and camping gear on the road along with a broken headlight and helmet. It also appeared the motorcycle had gone off the roadway towards the end of the curve of the road. Among the belongings was a journal where an entry was notated regarding traveling 100 miles per hour.  The speed limit posted in the area is 45 miles per hour. It was determined that speed was a contributing factor to the accident.
