Man dies of apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound on Highway 70

On Saturday, July 27, 2019 at approximately 6:00 p.m., law enforcement and medical personnel received a report of a male on the side of Highway 70, at approximately mile post 308, with injuries. The reports, which were mixed, referenced a possible accident followed by a report of the male having a gunshot wound.

Law enforcement from Graham County, Pima, Department of Public Safety and Life Line Ambulance arrived to find a number of citizens assisting the male, later identified as 45-year-old Kent Keith Power of Gila County.

Power had an apparent gunshot wound to the right side of his head and a handgun was next to the body. Power was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Investigators learned that Powers was under investigation by Gila County Sheriff’s Office. A family member was driving Power through Graham County when he asked to get out of the vehicle near Fort Thomas. Investigators were told that Powers does own a 9mm handgun.

The medical examiner was notified and Power was taken to Vining Funeral Home pending further examination. Power’s family was notified by the Gila County Sheriff’s Office of his death.

The investigation is ongoing.
