Lydia R. Martinez

Our beloved Lydia R. Martinez, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend to all that had the privilege of knowing her, passed away Tuesday, April 18th, 2017.

Lydia Martinez was born in Morenci, AZ on December 26, 1926. She married Jesus Martinez in 1945. They had a son Robert Martinez. Unfortunately, Jesus died in a mine accident in 1948.

In 1950, Lydia married Charlie Martinez. From this marriage, she had four children; Cecilia, Charlene, Christin and Charles. While raising her children, she worked at the Phelps Dodge Store and Buffo’s Jewelry.

Lydia attended Eastern Arizona College, where she took courses in upholstery, work working and quilting. Lydia loved sports, especially her Morenci Wildcats, U of A Wildcats and Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Her favorite holiday was Christmas, which she always made special and unforgettable for the whole family.

Lydia was a member of St. Rosa Lima Spanish choir, daughters of America and volunteered at Mount Graham Community Hospital.

Lydia was a person of faith and lived life serving others. She will be missed but not forgotten.

Lydia was blessed with 5 children, 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

A viewing and Rosary will be held on Thursday, April 27, 2017 beginning at 6:00 p.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church with the Mass being held on Friday, April 28th at 9:00 a.m. also at St. Rose of Lima. Interment will be in the Safford Cemetery.
