Gila Valley Pioneer Days is this Saturday

The 2018 Gila Valley Pioneer Days is this weekend with events starting Friday evening, July 20 and continuing through Saturday, July 21. There will be a variety show Friday night at 6:00 PM at the David M. Player Center for the Arts. Tickets are $2.50. Entertainment will include music, dance, comedy and more.

A Rodeo is planned for 7:00 PM on Friday at the Vard Lines Arena in Pima. Entries will be taken between 6:00 – 6:45 PM on the day of the rodeo.  Rodeo activities will include:

Stick Horse Race
Age groups: 6 and under, 7 to 10, 11 and up. Please bring your own stick.

Cow Hide Race
Horseback rider pulls another rider on a cow hide down the arena, around a barrel and back to the top of the arena. Limited to 40 teams and 2 runs per person.

Greased Pigs / Money Steers
Release pigs in the arena and kids chase them until caught. Age groups are 6 and under and 7 to 10.
Release steers in the arena with a prize tied to the tail and the kids chase until they get all the prizes off the tails. For ages 11 and up.

Cowboy Musical Chairs
Riders start at the top of the arena, all sitting on a chair holding their horse. When the music starts, riders jump on their horse and race to the bottom of the arena finding a chair to sit on. The last rider not able to find a chair is out. There will be one less chair each trip until there’s a winner.
Youth division 16 and under
Open division
Each division is limited to 20 riders.

Ribbon Roping
Roper ropes a calf out of chute then muggers hold the calf while the other member of the team grabs a ribbon off the tail of the calf and races back to the top of the arena.
Limited to 40 teams and 2 runs per person.
Male / Female combination only.

Mormon Team Roping
Header on horseback ropes the steers head and turns it for the heeler who is on foot to rope the steer’s feet.
Limited to 40 teams and 2 runs per person.

A family dance is scheduled for Friday night from 8:30 PM to 11:00 PM at the Pima Stake Center parking lot.

Saturday Events

Pioneer Days 5K & Fun Run
6:00 AM
Thatcher High School parking lot
Registration is due by 6:00 PM on July 20
Cost: $12.00 per runner

The Fun Run will start at 6:00 am at the Thatcher High School parking lot with the 5K beginning immediately after. There will be a $12 entry fee to cover the cost of the shirt and registration. To guarantee that you receive a shirt you must register by July 11th. Awards and prizes will be given out to the top finishers. Co-Ed Volleyball Tournament
8:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Pima, Safford, Thatcher and EAC Gyms
Registration due by 5:00 on July 18th.
Cost: $40.00 per team

The games are 6-on-6, but there must be 2 men and 2 women on the court at all times. You can have up to 8 players on the roster. There will be “A” and “B” divisions. Whoever registers the team (with an email address) will be designated as the team captain. Team captains will be responsible to disseminate game times and places. All games will be timed, and the scoring will be rally scoring. Each team will have several round-robin games, and then at the end, there will be a single-elimination tournament.

3 on 3 Basketball Tournament
1:00 – 5:00 PM
Pima, Safford, Thatcher and EAC Gyms
Registration due by 5:00 PM on July 18
12 & under: $15/team, 16 & under: $20/team, open: $25/team

You can have up to 5 players on your team. There will be 3 divisions: 12 & under, 16 & under and open. You must have a captain register (it doesn’t have to be a player—it will be whoever paid online and gave their email address). Team captains will be responsible to disseminate game times and places.

All games will be timed and scoring will be: two points for a 3 pointer, one point for every other shot (unless the court doesn’t have a 3-point line, then every shot will be 2 points). Every team will be guaranteed several round-robin games and then there will be a single-elimination tournament.

Parade
5:30 PM (Parade entries line up at 4:30 PM)

The parade starts at Dan Hinton School (146 E 400 S in Pima) and takes the following route:

1.5 blocks west on 400 S to Main St
Two blocks north on Main to 200 S
Two blocks west on 200 S to 200 W
One block north on 200 W to 100 S
Two blocks east on 100 S to Main St
One block south on Main St to 200 S
Two blocks east on 200 S to 200 E
Two blocks south on 200 E, ending at Dan Hinton School

Floats may be parked and participants picked up near Dan Hinton School or at the swimming pool parking lot.

Plenty of great choices to choose from. The main BBQ is only $5.00 per plate (Cash only). If the weather turns bad, food will be available in the PHS Cafeteria.

Fireworks
After dark. Fireworks start after the pageant ends. Please keep children close.
