Fire burning in Gila River bed

SAFFORD – Fire crews are battling a blaze burning in the river bed just east of Safford. The fire is believed to have started sometime Monday afternoon. Personnel on the scene say that no structures are threatened as the fire is confined to the river area. Safford Fire Chief, Clark Bingham, told Gila Valley Central that the wind has blown up the fire somewhat and crews are unable to extinguish it. Engine crews will continue to monitor the fire to protect exposure and structures until the fire burns itself out.
