SAFFORD – The Safford Bulldogs started out strong last year, winning its first four out of five games, but injuries and placement into the larger 4A section wore the team down and it couldn’t muster another victory.

Back in its traditional spot in 3A this year, Safford’s hopes on capturing a sectional title rest with returning skill players, such as quarterback Manuel Apricio and running back E.J. Estrada, and on the large shoulders of lineman Ralph Frias, who, at 6’7” and 300 pounds, has a good shot at playing collegiately.

Safford will be tested early and often with its first two games on the road at Payson and Sahuarita before holding its home opener Sept. 2 against rival Thatcher.
