The Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters will travel to Tucson on Saturday to take on the Pima Aztecs. Both teams are undefeated in the Western States Football League. The Monsters did defeat Pima 21-0 in a non conference game to start the season. A lot has changed since then.

The Aztecs, who are in their final season, have really rallied around that fact. This will be their final home game of the season and have no plans to have their final home game end in a loss.

Eastern Arizona has only had one defeat this year. A 3 point loss in Yuma to the then Top 5 Arizona Western Matadors. They have over-powered their opponents on the ground offensively rushing for 2201 yards in 8 games. That is good for 3rd in the entire country. One of the biggest problems for opposing defenses is the number of different running backs the Gila Monsters use: 16 different players have carried the ball for Eastern this year. Wilbur Cooper is the leading rusher with 434 yards – a true backfield by committee.

Defensively the Monsters are led by two freshmen linebackers – Sharrod Frazier and Demarkus Robbins. They both have been impressive stepping into the starting roll. EAC has the top defense in the league when you look at points per game. They only give up 16.8 points per game.

Pima scores, on average, 28 points per game. They have also done it with defense. They held Scottsdale to just 3 field goals when they had an average 30+ points per game.

Eastern Head Coach John O’Mera is looking for his 142nd win of his career in this game.

Kickoff is scheduled for 1 pm Saturday and you can hear the game on KATO 1230 AM or online by clicking here.
