Baseball and Softball state tournaments heat up this week

Gila Valley baseball and softball teams are heading into the “second season” as the regular season has ended and it’s now win or go home.

The 1A and 3A sof5ball playoffs started last weekend at Rose Mofford Sports Complex in Phoenix. #10 Fort Thomas fell to #7 Mogollon 8-2 and #15 Duncan dropped an 8-1 game to #2 St. David on the 1A side. #15 Safford lost 12-2 in 6 innings to #2 River Valley in 3A action.

The 2A softball “Play-in” games are on May 1st at the higher seed. Teams that finished 9-24 in the rankings will play each other with the winners moving into the 16 team tournament against the top 8 seeds. #15 Pima will host #18 Antelope, #12 Willcox will host #21 Alchesay and #10 Thatcher will face #23 Tonophah at home. These games are scheduled for 4pm on May 1st.

The 2A and 3A “play-in” baseball games will be April 30th at the higher seed. #22 Safford will travel to #11 Blue Ridge. The Bulldogs have beat the Yellow Jackets twice this season and will have to do it for a 3rd time to make the state playoffs. #23 Pima will travel up the hill to take on #10 Morenci. Morenci swept the regular season series but only escaped with a 2-1 win in the last game.  Thatcher finished the regular season as the #4 seed and won’t know who they play until after the play in round. They are scheduled to play at 6:30pm May 3rd at the Goodyear Sports Complex.

The 1A baseball brackets are set. #15 Fort Thomas will take on #2 Mogollon at 6:30pm on May 3rd also at the Goodyear Sports Complex.
