Questions answered regarding Lafe Nelson School Closure

SAFFORD – In light of recent school closures, questions arise.

Gila Valley Central contacted Henry Dunkerson, Director of Instructional Services at the Safford Unified School District, in the effort to shed some light on the situation.

“All Lafe Nelson School kindergarten through second grade students will be attending Ruth Powell School,” Dunkerson said. “Students in third and fourth grade will be attending school at Dorothy Stinson School. The fifth and sixth grade students will be going to Safford Middle School, and will be located in the B-Building which will only contain the LNS students. Again, only Lafe Nelson students will be moving to other campuses.”

Dunkerson told Gila Valley Central that all Lafe Nelson School students who rode the bus will be bused to their new locations, and picked up at the same bus stop.

“We will work with parents for students who used to walk and now will need to ride and visa-versa,” Dunkerson said.

When asked if the new schools were going to be hiring new aids for the influx of students, Dunkerson said that the Lafe Nelson aids will transition to the new sites with the students.

“The school budget has not increased because of this event. We will continue to operate with the budget as previously planned,” Dunkerson said.

According to Dunkerson, the Lafe Nelson will be the only site that will remain closed for extensive repairs. Once the other sites have be reopened, they will be continue be repaired during school breaks.

“All schools are functioning,” Dunkerson. “It is only the Lafe Nelson site that is not operational.”
